Deportation and Destitution: What social workers need to know about the planned changes in the UK Government's 'Family Returns' proposals
Organised in partnership with Asylum Matters, this lunchtime webinar is designed to inform social workers about the changes proposed by the UK Government on family returns, deportation, and the changes which would prevent social workers and local authorities from providing support to families, children, and care leavers without a secure immigration status.
Social workers are required, both legally and ethically, to put children’s welfare at the centre of decision-making. These proposals risk shifting the focus away from children’s needs and towards immigration compliance.
From frontline social work experience, we know that destitution creates serious safeguarding risks. These include homelessness and unsafe housing arrangements; food poverty; increased risk of exploitation and trafficking; disengagement from health and education services; worsening mental health; and family breakdown.
Join us to hear from BASW, Asylum Matters, and other experts to hear about how this can impact social workers. There will also be a Q&A at the end.
Delivered via MS Teams. For any queries please contact ProfDE@basw.co.uk.
