Male Social Workers and Domestic Abuse

presented by BASW England Worcestershire Branch

Mike Skilbeck is a Social Work Lecturer at the University of Gloucester and has recently been a Children and Families’ Team Manager. Mike will talk about his current PhD study.

Social work is predominantly thought of by society as a female-led profession.

Gender discourse will have a significant influence on how men are perceived by the families they work with, and by peer professionals. Mike’s PhD plans to combine a mixture of psychological theory and research with social work practice to help understand some of the challenges around how male social workers can work within domestic abuse. The PhD aims to critically analyse the effects and impacts of the use of self in practice, understanding social constructs, and building better practice and knowledge in social work training and development.
