Risk Outside the Home Child Protection Pathways: Learning from pilots - 17th September 11-12

This is an opportunity learn about the key features, opportunities and challenges of Risk Outside of the Home (ROTH) Child Protection pathways which have been developed via DfE-funded pilots. The session will explore the national and local policy implications, and the views of caregivers and young people. It will be of interest to a wide spectrum of professionals who work in, oversee or inspect children’s social care, who fund or deliver interventions for young people at risk of significant harm, or who who attend child protection conferences.

This session will be led by Rachael Owens. Rachael has worked in social care for over twenty years and since qualifying, she has specialised in practice and research focused on adolescent safety and well-being. Since 2019, she has worked in the Contextual Safeguarding Research Programme, now based at Durham University and undertakes research into the implications of Contextual Safeguarding for social work practice. Sustaining Social Work: Practitioner experiences of Contextual Safeguarding. She has recently completed which involved practice research with over 60 social workers. It exposed the challenges practitioners face and the urgent need for policy and practice reform to enable ethical practice around extra-familial harm. Rachael has also recently led a project developing Contextual Safeguarding Community Group Conferences.
