BASW saddened to report passing of Terry Bamford
It is with great sadness for everyone at BASW to learn the news that Terry Bamford has suddenly passed on following an accident.
Terry was an early member of BASW in the 1970s and served as chair of BASW between 1982 and 1984.
His career in social work spanned many decades and covered numerous sectors, including the probation service and healthcare.
As well as being a director of social services, he led a primary care trust and held numerous leadership roles for campaign groups.
His work and influence crossed borders, notably through the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and Amnesty International.
BASW chief executive Ruth Allen said: “My thoughts are with Terry’s family and close friends. Terry was greatly loved and respected within our profession – in the UK and internationally.
“He was a star of ethics, human rights and compassion in my professional firmament for over 20 years and it is very sad to learn of his passing.
“As one of the original members of BASW Terry brought a compassionate, informed, dedicated presence to the association.
“I was looking forward to celebrating BASW’s 50th anniversary this year with him – not least through launching the book on 50 years of social work he was co-editing.
“We will have him in our hearts and minds as we launch that book, a fitting legacy, and reflect throughout this year on all who have contributed to creating BASW and taking our profession forward.”
BASW chair Gerry Nosowska added: “BASW owes so much to Terry and his legacy will continue to influence our work. We will miss him.”
David Jones, chair of BASW International Committee, also paid tribute: “Terry made a huge personal contribution to international social work over more than 45 years, serving as trusted guide and mentor to many IFSW Presidents and activists and helping shape many global policies.
“He will be missed by the world of social work but of course especially by his family. Our thoughts are with them.”
BASW sends our deepest condolences to the family of Terry Bamford, who have asked for privacy as they come to terms with his sudden and unexpected death.
