Branches
A BASW branch is a group established and run by BASW members.
It can run events and activities for members, contribute to campaigns and may bring motions to the BASW AGM.
A Branch may also invite non- members, with a view to encouraging BASW membership for those eligible. Non-member attendance at branches may be restricted depending on topics of discussion, decisions and wider BASW policies.

BASW England branches - how to get involved
Black Country branch
The BASW England Black Country Branch is one of the longest running branches and continues to be a very active branch who meet regularly to discuss local and national issues and the impact upon social work.
The branch holds seminars on various subject matters, in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton, where we are joined by notable national speakers.
We encourage and welcome all to attend and join in our discussions. Not only will you receive the warmest of greetings but at our in-person events you are provided with one of our famous samosas and a drink.
Our core committee is looking to expand and diversify, so we are looking for individuals to join our committee and become involved in the development of branch activities."

Coventry & Warwickshire branch
"The BASW England Coventry and Warwickshire branch is a great way to connect as a student and as a social worker. The branch has helped me gain connections and knowledge I wouldn’t of gained if I was not part of the branch. Given the current pressures and stress the profession is under it is a great space to speak about our concerns but our achievements as well with other colleges.
"The speakers and events are a great way to develop my professional development. I would say to anyone come along to the events at the branch and meetings as they are invaluable and so beneficial for all."
James Ind, Branch Secretary.
"I’ve been involved with the branch since it started in 2018 and later became Branch Chair. This has given me fantastic networking opportunities and as well as making invaluable connections.
"I really enjoy having a say and influencing BASW’s work through putting motions forward and presenting them at AGM’s, being involved in preparing events which members have told us are important to them and working in partnership with Coventry University, where we have held events hosting people with lived experience of care. I get a real sense of team work and satisfaction at our events and would encourage anybody to try it."
Diana Harris, Branch Chair
The BASW England Coventry & Warwickshire Branch carried out a survey in March 2024 regarding the ongoing cost of living crisis and its implications for social workers and students living, studying or working in the Coventry & Warwickshire area. This report presents an analysis of survey responses and recommendations for action and can be viewed here.

The Chair of the Kent branch describes what being part of a branch can offer:
"Being part of a local BASW branch is a great opportunity for lots of reasons. One of the key things that it could offer is the regular chance to network with colleagues who also work or study social work in your area; this means when you identify local needs, problems or information to be aware of you have a ready-made group of colleagues to discuss with.
"There may be issues that present in the area, that you could take some collective action on and raising the profile of a particular problem, your voice is much more likely to be heard as a group. Another important benefit is to gain opportunity for CPD events which many branches organise for their members, these and meetings can offer a valuable chance for peer reflection on learning, as required by Social Work England."

Worcestershire branch
BASW England Worcestershire branch, (which also incorporates colleague members from Herefordshire), has been an active Branch for 5 years now, surviving the pandemic by switching our meetings online and offering both regular CPD opportunities and sessions of support for social workers during a time of great stress.
We usually meet every 2 months, mostly via Teams, but more recently occasionally in person again, and strive to invite speakers and contributors who share our passion for social work in all its many facets. We also want to be seen as an activist branch and have been proactive in making hands-on contributions to several local charities and campaigns, as well as supporting individual members to take part in national events, through small grants.
