British Association of Social Workers Northern Ireland
The British Association of Social Workers Northern Ireland (BASW NI) fully supports social workers who have chosen to go on strike. Social workers provide vital services which improve society for everyone. It is wrong that their contribution is not recognised in the form of a fair pay offer, leaving them to fall behind their colleagues elsewhere in the UK.
As the professional association for social work—not a trade union—the role of BASW NI does not extend to balloting members in relation to industrial action. However, we as an Association share many common interests with our trade union colleagues and we stand in solidarity with them. Furthermore, many members of BASW NI are also members of the unions which have voted to strike and BASW NI wholeheartedly supports their decisions.
The public rightly expect high quality public services. The pressures on social work are the consequence of underinvestment, decision making driven by short term considerations, and a lack of political leadership. Social workers, and the people who use their services deserve better and BASW NI will do all within our power to support the calls of our trade union colleagues.
