‘Sharing time and space’ – winner of BASW’s World Social Work Day photo competition
Abyd Quinn Aziz image of two young people sitting by a wall in a Moroccan square won a BASW competition to celebrate World Social Work Day.
The competition asked entrants to submit photographs that best captured this year’s theme of WSWD – promoting the importance of human relationships.
Abyd, who is director of the social work programme at Cardiff University, took the photo while on holiday in Marrakech a few weeks ago.
He said: “I am thrilled and honoured to have won. My family and I had gone away for a holiday during half-term before my wife started a series of chemotherapy treatment, so knew it would probably be the last time we went abroad for a while.
“I was walking through Jemaa el-Fnaa, which is the main square in Marrakech, and was taking pictures of the Koutoubia Mosque and the people strolling around.
“I saw these two young people sitting close to each other sharing time and space. That summed up the importance of human relationships and the need we all have for closeness with other human beings.
“It also reminded me that we are all related and should remember to give each other our time.”
