50-4-50 Challenge: Help raise vital funding for the Social Workers' Benevolent Trust
In June, the Social Work Benevolent Trust (SWBT) is celebrating 50 years of supporting social workers through difficult times with small grants.
To celebrate this anniversary, SWBT is delighted to launch the 50-4-50 Challenge to raise the profile of SWBT, as well as secure vital additional funding.
Nobody becomes a social worker for either the money or the social kudos, but the level of public awareness of the pressures and stresses social workers experience is low. At times, social workers’ colleagues are unaware of the difficulties they are experiencing, and they can be unwilling to admit their need for support.
Therefore, by taking part in the 50-4-50 Challenge, you will not only be raising funds to support social workers in hardship but also helping to raise the profile of SWBT so that it can support more social workers and their families.
Take part in the SWBT 50-4-50 Challenge!
SWBT is looking for BASW members to join in with the challenge, or sponsor trustees who are taking on the challenge.
You can find out more, including how to get involved and how to donate, on the SWBT JustGiving page.
- You can simply donate on the site, on the “Give Now” link
- You can sponsor one of the fundraisers by clicking on their link
- Or become a fundraiser yourself through the “Start Fundraising” link.
If you prefer to support SWBT in a different way, you can send a cheque to The Treasurer SWBT, c/o BASW, Wellesley House, 37 Waterloo Street, Birmingham B2 5PP.
What Trustees are doing for the 50-4-50 Challenge!

"My plan is 'Jogging 50 kilometres during June' but I hope to make that 50 miles; and hoping to raise £300 for the Trust. I hope to raise more than that, with no upper limit though I shall be surprised, and pleasantly so, if I manage to raise £500.
"Whilst raising money for the Trust is important, for me of equal importance is raising the Trust’s profile and the awareness of the needs of colleagues, past and present."

Simon, SWBT Treasurer, is fundraising by undertaking to sell at least 50 copies of his book, “Making a Difference: reflections of a children’s social worker”. The book is available for £10 from the publishers or can be ordered from most online bookshops.
“I outline more than 40 years of social work, undertaken in South Africa and the UK. It is not an academic work but explores social and racial issues that have affected my career. All proceeds are assisting SWBT to achieve its 50-4-50 target.”

"My challenge for 50-4-50 is to be sponsored knitting 50 premature baby hats and 50 premature baby blankets by the date of SWBT 50th Anniversary. I am aiming for a £250.00 target.
"These are some first size hats for 1-2lb babies I started to knit on 1st March, and will be adding some blue shortly and hopefully pink, depending on availability. At present, I have started the second size 2-3lb baby hats and plan to move on to the third size 3-4lb baby hats before knitting the blankets."

"My challenge is to walk with my husband 50 miles over 7 days. The average length of each walk is 7 miles. We will start all the walks from our home and we have drawn and written up the walks (we have made them all start from a parking point nearby, rather than our house).
"We hope to gain extra support via the local media. They all have some points of interest e.g. heritage railway; canals; woods; glass industry; an extinct volcano and a nature reserve. The map of our first walk is set out below."
Rupert
"My 50 4 50 will be running or cycling every day for 50 days, finishing on the day that SWBT is 50. (A minimum of 5 miles each day)."
