BASW England Statement: Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
BASW England wish to offer our condolences to the families of Christie, Emily and Nadia.
Whilst we welcome the publication of the three independent investigations and recommendations from Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), it does not change the fact that these three women were failed by a service which should have protected them and in a place where people have a right to feel secure and safe.
This is why BASW will continue to campaign against the abuses of people’s human rights, including in health and care settings.
In light of what has happened we urge Government to investigate wider patient safety in mental health units as a matter of priority and BASW England welcome the tentative indications from the Minister for Mental Health and Women’s Health Strategy, Maria Caulfield MP, that there will be a nation public inquiry to establish the wider systematic failures.
