BASW invited to event where DfE “resets relationship” with stakeholders
BASW Chair Julia Ross accepted an invitation to a high-level networking event at the Department of Education (DfE) last week, as new Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, hosted key stakeholders who work with children and young people.
In her welcome speech, Bridget said: “Under this Labour government, education will once again be at the heart of change, and children and their futures will be at the forefront of national life. You and all those you represent are an essential part of this.”
The event was an early chance to meet the new ministerial team at DfE rather than an insight into new strategies. And while teaching and schools were the main subjects discussed, Phillipson did recognise the social work sector:
“I said on my first day as Secretary of State that we’ll reset our relationship with you and that we’ll change the way we support and work in partnership with our workforces - our incredible teachers and school support staff, early years workers, those in our colleges and universities and social workers.”
Speaking of the event BASW Chair Julia Ross said: “It was a privilege and an honour to meet Bridget Phillipson Secretary of State for Education and Janet Daby MP in person.
“There was an incredible buzz of excitement and energy with emphasis on moving at pace and engaging collaboratively with all services. Collaboration in place of competition as the theme, as well as a welcome determination to listen to the voice of children.
“I was personally delighted to meet Janet Daby MP who warmly embraced being a former children and families social worker. She was demonstrably pleased to meet BASW and wants a follow up meeting. I promised we’d be in touch soonest and to use our expertise to support the way ahead.”
