BASW responds to UK Government's Support Package for Councils in England
The announcement is in addition to funding outlined at the previous settlement. While we appreciate the government's recognition of the challenges councils face, we express our concerns regarding the lack of a long-term funding settlement and the impact of years of austerity cuts on councils' ability to maintain vital adult and children's care services.
The support package, with an additional £500 million allocated to the Social Care Grant, addresses a key concern raised by councils. However, it is crucial to note that this funding comes in the context of high inflation, and longstanding instability within the sector. We urge a sustained focus on the long-term financial sustainability of local government.
While the increase in Core Spending Power of at least 4% is a positive step, it is essential to recognise the challenges posed by the years of austerity cuts that councils have endured. The proposed referendum principles and the commitment to protecting local taxpayers are acknowledged, but it remains imperative to address the cumulative impact of austerity on the delivery of essential services, particularly in adult and children's care.
BASW England welcomes the additional funding for social care and emphasises the critical importance of these resources in maintaining and enhancing both adult and children's care services. The funding is a vital lifeline for social workers working tirelessly to support children, individuals and families in our communities.
Margaret Young and Jackie Mahoney, Co-Chairs of the BASW Adult Social Work Group, comments:
“While we appreciate the government's efforts to address immediate challenges with this funding package, it is essential to underscore the critical role it plays in maintaining social care services. This funding is instrumental in ensuring that social workers can continue to provide essential support to individuals, promoting their well-being and safeguarding their rights. We want to see targeted efforts to address the challenges in commissioning, recruitment, and retention of staff rather than just the plugging of existing budget deficits."
"While BASW England cautiously welcomes the government's support package, we emphasise the urgency of a sustained commitment to addressing the long-term financial challenges faced by local government. We look forward to continued engagement with the government and the sector to work towards a more comprehensive and sustainable local government finance system."
