BASW: Rise in incidents of domestic abuse ‘an epidemic’

As Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) report a 31% increase in known cases of domestic abuse between 2013 and 2015, BASW Professional Officer Nushra Mansuri has described it as an ‘epidemic’.

Commenting on the increase, Ms Mansuri said: “It is no exaggeration to describe the current prevalence of domestic abuse as an epidemic given that the number of incidents being reported has risen dramatically over the last 12 months by a staggering 31%.  This could not be happening at a worse time when essential frontline services such as the police have been forced to cut back. 

“Consequently, the report today highlights that 75% of police forces in England and Wales are failing victims of domestic abuse. As Christmas approaches, many more families are likely to find themselves ringing 999, as we know that this is one of the most vulnerable periods for those experiencing domestic abuse and in some cases, there is nowhere for victims to flee as refuge provision is also shrinking. 

“In light of this report, today is a day to take stock rather than simply point fingers at the particular agency that happens to be under scrutiny.  The Government needs to resolve to properly address this issue by deploying the necessary resources right across the piece.  Domestic abuse is a form of terrorism in the home environment and needs to be taken seriously.”
