BASW statement on the current situation in Israel and Palestine
The renewed conflict between Israel and Palestine has already caused significant civilian deaths and casualties and risks an escalation into a wider regional and even global conflict. Social workers on both sides have witnessed grief and destruction and are working to support individuals and communities living in fear.
BASW International Committee Chair, David N Jones, who has visited Israel and Palestine in the past, commented that "the causes of this conflict are multi-faceted and arguably go back centuries. However, the immediate reality is that communities and social workers on the ground experience fear and tragedy today. Urgent international intervention is essential.
David continued: "BASW supports the recent statement from the International Federation of Social Workers calling on international bodies and member organisations to reinforce a process where all sides to this conflict can work towards a common vision for peace, equality and social/economic development.
"As the UK representative to the International Federation, BASW recognises the complexity of the history and current political situation. However, the safety and wellbeing of people must always come first. BASW hopes for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the relentless suffering which is the current reality" David Jones concluded.
