BASW supports Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month 2021
The British Association of Social Workers is proud to support Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month 2021.
Every June since 2008, people from across the UK have celebrated Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month. Through celebration, education and raising awareness, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month helps to tackle prejudice, challenge myths and to amplify the voices of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in wider society.
How BASW is supporting GRT History Month
The theme this year is #MakeSomeSpace. For each week of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month 2021, we will be exploring a different aspect of the #MakeSomeSpace theme.
This week, we encourage members to #MakeSomeSpace through learning.
During World Social Work Month, BASW Cymru delivered a special webinar: 'Social Work with Romani and Traveller Children'.
This webinar, which is available to watch on Youtube, included background on the history of Romani and Traveller people, ethnicity as a legal and protected characteristic, current research, the key issues, the impact of discrimination and hate speech. This webinar should be of value to any social worker who wants to learn more about GRT communities and how best to support children and families who lead nomadic lifestyles.

Please do keep an eye on BASW's social media accounts throughout the month - we've got lots of activities and content planned to support GRT History Month.
Our theme for next week will be #MakeSomeSpace through campaigning, where we'll explore some of the discrimination and institutional racism GRT communities experience, often directly from the state. We'll outline how BASW is standing in solidarity with GRT communities across the UK, as well as how social workers can support these activities.
