BASW World Social Work Month 2021

This year World Social Work Day is on Tuesday 16 March

Each year BASW is proud to stand together with social workers across the world to mark World Social Work Day, which this year is on 16th March. This year we are delighted to be marking WSWD with a range of exciting activities across the whole month of March 2021.

The 2021 IFSW World Social Day theme is Úbuntu: I am Because We Are.

In such uncertain times, Ubuntu is a powerful message on the need for solidarity at all levels: within communities, societies and globally. It is a message that all people are interconnected and that its now more vital than ever for people to come together to build a sustainable, fair and equitable future for all.

BASW will be hosting a range of activities, webinars and virtual events throughout the month of March to explore and reflect upon the Úbuntu theme, including:

Video messages from Ruth Allen BASW CEO and Gerry Nosowska BASW Chair
An online conversation with Margaret Humphreys followed by a showing of the film Oranges and Sunshine, which tells the story of how Margaret uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times: the forced migration of children from the United Kingdom to experience abuse and exploitation in Australian 'workhouses'.
Several podcasts exploring social work from a range of global perspectives, including a podcast with the US-based National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
An essay competition for social work students, with four awards of £500 from the Social Workers Union (SWU) up for grabs (open to UK HEIs)
Engagement with policymakers in Westminster to raise awareness of the importance of social work and social workers both during and beyond Covid-19
BASW England, BASW Cymru, SASW and BASW NI will each lead a week of activities in their respective nations throughout the month
