Care Review: Call for ideas
BASW strongly encourages members to share their views
The Review of Children's Social Care in England has put out a call for ideas around how to improve children’s social care.
BASW strongly encourages members to share their views. These must be 250 words or less.
Messages BASW members have flagged as important, and that you may wish to consider raising include:
- No lasting and meaningful change can occur in a system devastated by cuts and a decade of austerity. The system must be funded.
- There should be no fragmentation of services – working together to support families who move in and out of risk is essential.
- Investment in early years & preventative services ,is imperative.
- Adopting a childrens-rights based approach must also be front and centre of the review.
- A national service is not in the best interest of children, who are best served by local services who understand the needs of their communities.
- The review must be committed to ensuring children are cared for until the age of 18 and that unregulated placements are not good enough for any child.
- Developing services led by and for experts- including those with lived experience and social workers who work tirelessly to support them – is essential.
- Work must be done to make sure services embody anti-racist, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive values at every stage of delivery.
