Expansion of Community Mental Health Services a 'vital step forward', insists BASW

This expansion aligns with BASW’s longstanding calls to shift focus away from reactive crisis intervention and toward accessible, early,  local support. Placing non-clinical, walk-in services at the heart of communities, alongside housing and employment assistance, is a vital step toward tackling the root causes of mental distress. 

As the government proceeds with its 10-Year Health Plan, which includes a new Mental Health Strategy, BASW has argued that health reform must be built on a foundation of strong social care, early intervention, and multi-agency collaboration. Dedicated mental health emergency spaces will ensure people in crisis receive compassionate, specialised care instead of experiencing long, unsuitable waits in busy A&E departments. 

BASW also strongly made this case during the passage of the Government's new Mental Health Act through parliament last year. Through our regular engagement with MPs, Peers and Ministers on the legislation, we repeatedly pressed for a radical shift towards prevention – treating people earlier and faster, and supporting those with mental health conditions to live a full life and stay active in education, work, family life and their communities. It is welcome that the Government has taken on board our views and is translating them into positive, workable action.

Social workers are at the front line of community mental health, supporting people and families through complex challenges every day. While this capital investment is important for preventative care, its ultimate success relies on a resourced, fully supported social work and social care workforce. We do not want to see these vital new services leading to existing services being reduced in order to staff them. BASW looks forward to working alongside the government, local authorities, and NHS partners to ensure these new centres are fully integrated with expert social work practice to deliver lasting, holistic care for all.
