Ian Dickson
Ian spent almost his entire adult life working in and around the care system-as a social worker, a manager of children’s residential services, an Ofsted inspector, an advocate, and a campaigner.
In May 2021, Ian spoke to PSW Magazine about plans for an association of care experienced social workers, which is currently flourishing. This is yet another part of Ian’s legacy which will continue to live on.
Between January and July 2022, Article 39’s Director, Carolyne Willow, and Ian Dickson held a series of conversations to record his reflections on growing up in care, and how he devoted his adult life to making sure children are loved, valued and can fulfil their dreams. The piece also includes Ian’s astute thoughts on the recent care review in England, as well as the #KeepCaringto18 movement.
On 25 December, Ian wrote the following in response to the article being published:
“My star log is growing to a close now & I am receiving palliative care to close the door gently. So many brilliant people still working in care settings alongside the cowboys. Know the difference.”
We extend our deepest condolences to Ian's family and friends at this time.
