A message from Ruth Allen, BASW CEO, for World NGO Day
Ahead of World NGO Day (27 February), the Council of Europe standing conference of International NGOs - known as INGO, where I have a role on behalf of European social workers - held a webinar to explore the current challenges for NGOs and civil society groups in conflict and post-conflict societies, and taking account of the rise of nationalistic, populist and anti-democratic politics across wider Europe.
This includes concerns about restrictions on civil society groups under new laws in Russia, the hampering of NGOs working to support migrants in Greece and both the achievements and challenges for NGOs during the pandemic.
A recording of the webinar is available and includes talks from the social worker President of the INGO, Anna Rurka, and from Rory Truell from the International Federation of Social Workers amongst many others.
I will be organising a webinar a bit later in the year about the Council of Europe and how social workers across Europe are influencing its vital work on human rights and democracy.
