SASW meets with Carol Mochan, MSP
This week, SASW National Director Alison Bavidge met with Labour MSP, Carol Mochan to discuss issues affecting the social work profession in Scotland. Ms Mochan has been a strong supporter of social work since she was elected. She previously supported SASW’s mileage campaign and social work student bursary campaign. She also raised the need to encourage more people into the social work profession with Scottish Ministers.
During the meeting, we emphasised the recruitment and retention issues the social work profession in Scotland is facing - alongside the impact of unsustainable caseloads. We also highlighted the importance of the National Social Work Agency in raising the profile of social work as an attractive and sustainable career choice.
Ms Mochan recognised the challenges we highlighted and agreed that this is a critical point for social work in Scotland, and that swift action must be taken to support not only the professionals, but people, communities, and families. She agreed to work with SASW to advocate for the needs of the social work profession in Scotland. We will keep Ms Mochan and her team informed of our member’s views and are committed to working with all MSPs to make changes that benefit social workers.
Our thanks to Ms Mochan and her team for taking the time to meet with us and continuing to proactively engage with us and support our work.
