Two years since Russian invasion of Ukraine
This month is the second anniversary of the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
At a time of global conflict and climate change, Europe’s response to Ukrainians forced to flee their homes is an example of how those seeking safety should be welcomed. It shows a compassionate and inclusive response is possible, when there is a will.
Getting on for 200,000 Ukrainians, mostly women and children, have been welcomed into homes and communities across the UK. They, in turn, have made an important contribution to life in the UK. The response to Ukraine can be used in conversations about migration to show the potential for a positive and life-changing policy towards people fleeing conflict and disasters.
Over the last two years, BASW members have supported the International Federation of Social Workers Europe in its response to the needs of displaced people both inside Ukraine and across Europe, as well as its wider work to respond to conflict and disasters. BASW provides funding for humanitarian action and supports political lobbying in the EU and Council of Europe.
In the UK, BASW is taking a lead on challenging inhumane immigration and asylum policies in support of social workers who fight these on a daily basis for the children, families and adults they seek to help. These efforts demonstrate that social work is a human rights profession at its heart. BASW will continue to do this for all people affected by conflict and disaster.
