Black Country Branch review of the Law Commission Proposals on changes to social care law for disabled children
Is social work with disabled children too focused on safeguarding rather than support?
The Law Commission were asked by the Government to review social care law for disabled children, which at present relies on s17 of the Children act and s2 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Person's Act 1970. They are not looking at Education or Health Law.
Current legislation includes s17c which relies on the language of the National Assistance Act 1948 to define disability, and uses what we now regard as offensive terminology such as handicapped.
At this virtual meeting Sarah Goff, co-chair of the National Working Group on Safeguarding Disabled Children, and Allan Norman, from Celtic Knot Social Work consultancy, will share their views on the law commission proposals and members will be able to discuss:
1. Does s17 (and associated guidance) need replacing or rewriting? 2. What else needs to change?
Papers for the meeting will be circulated to attendees in advance.
