Discussions took place on how and where we could look at developing ‘flexibilities’ at a devolved level which offer greater support to vulnerable people and greater flexibilities for practitioners.
Whilst Welsh Government are awaiting discussions with the UK Parliament, they were interested to hear our suggestions and ideas and were specifically interested in practitioners’ experiences in working with vulnerable people. In the meeting, BASW Cymru advocated for:
- The redrafting of the infamous DoLS Form set;
- Use of existing flexibility under Welsh DoLS regulations;
- Publishing Wales-specific guidance on the conduct of the DoLS scheme;
- Encouraging development of courses on advanced Mental Capacity Act practice for professionals in Wales.
BASW Cymru agreed to put together a briefing paper for Welsh Government, and we’d like to hear from you, our members. Tell us about your experiences, what changes you’d like to see and importantly, if you would like to join us in developing our briefing paper and working with Welsh Government on this crucial issue. Please email Wales@BASW.co.uk.
This work is being led by Prof. Sam Baron (BASW Cymru) and Roger Laidlow (BASW Cymru member).
