BASW England appalled at Edenfield abuse
We are deeply concerned by the BBC Panorama coverage of appalling treatment and abuse of people at Edenfield Centre mental health hospital.
Our thoughts are with all those individuals and families affected at this very difficult time.
BASW England has been actively campaigning against the human rights abuse of people in assessment and treatment units and will continue to do so.
There must be effective whistleblowing and safeguarding systems in place to prevent any form of abusive, non-value based organisational cultures developing and to ensure that people who need support and care receive it with dignity and respect they deserve.
Before commenting further, we will await the outcome of the criminal investigation announced by Greater Manchester Police and inspection regulation action.
Edenfield is a medium secure unit. BASW will continue to campaign against the human rights abuse of all people in diverse settings including assessment and treatment units and medium secure units.
