Deadline to register to vote
On 4 May, people across England will be able to vote in the local elections. These elections will elect your Councillors, and will determine who runs your Council for the next 4 years.
To be eligible to vote in these elections, you must be registered to vote and have photo ID or a postal vote.
Register to vote here through the online form before the cut-off date of 17 April. You can also register for a postal vote here and make sure you give enough time to return the application via the post as this cannot be done online.
You normally only need to register once - not for every election. You’ll need to register again if you’ve changed your name, address or nationality.
New rules have come in for these elections which mean that you need photo ID to vote in local elections in England. Voters in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will need photo ID for General Elections.
If you do not have photo ID, you can contact your Council and get a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’. You will need a photo of yourself to get one of these certificates. For more information about getting a voter authority certificate, click here.
Over the coming weeks, we will share information about the upcoming local elections and how to find out the position of the main political parties standing for election.
