Over the past few months, BASW has facilitated a unique sector-wide conversation giving social workers the opportunity to shape the future of our profession and professional association.
There have been numerous ways for everyone to contribute – including an online survey, discussion groups, social media polls, and through open channels to communicate with us directly.
We’ve valued all the feedback we’ve received – thank you to everyone across the UK who has taken part and given their time generously to speak to us.
We were also heartened to hear about the many conversations that were sparked within and throughout the profession on the back of our launch. This is essential if we are to strengthen social work’s collective voice and truly fight for the change our profession, and society, needs currently. Long may it continue!
What happens now?
You’ve spoken, and we’re listening. The next steps are translating your views into tangible action.
As part of our recent World Social Work Day programme, we hosted an event to explore some of the early findings and discuss what changes BASW will adopt on the back of them. You can watch the event back below.
We are currently developing our five-year plan for BASW, which will incorporate the findings from The Big Conversation, and will be published later this year. In the meantime, many of the shorter-term suggestions will be put into practice over the coming weeks and months, which we will keep you updated on.
For example, we have already extended our digital channels on social media by opening a TikTok account and have been developing stronger messaging on key issues affecting social work, taking on board your desire for BASW to be bolder and more ambitious in our language and communications approach.
We will also be shortly publishing a report into the workforce findings that you shared with us through the survey. This will bolster our campaign with SWU for better professional working conditions and has already given us a tool for influencing MPs and ramping up our campaigning efforts, securing parliamentary questions, an early day motion urging attention from the government, and stronger dialogue with relevant Ministerial departments.

The Big Conversation might have closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to engage with us. In fact, we want to keep hearing from you!
