BASW CEO Ruth Allen comments on the resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss
After 44 days as Prime Minister, Liz Truss has announced her resignation and will cease to be Prime Minister on Friday 28th October after the Conservatives have selected their new Leader.
Questions about how long Liz Truss would be able to remain Prime Minister had been circling intensely for the past few days, after weeks of backtracking on her economic plan. This includes u-turning on a series of proposals her government had announced last month, such as the 45p tax cut.
Graham Brady visited Liz Truss in Downing Street this morning to discuss the feelings of Conservative MPs. At 1:30pm, Liz Truss announced outside Downing Street that she had tendered her resignation to the King.
The Conservative Party will now choose a new Leader and Prime Minister, ready for them to take office on Friday 28th October.
Speaking in response to the resignation, BASW UK Chief Executive Dr Ruth Allen has said:
“While the Government scrambles to get its act together, the problems facing the country continue to grow, with no solution in sight.
"Social care provision is under huge strain, poverty is removing hope and opportunity, and our workforce once again has to navigate the uncertainty of an unstable government with no vision on how to get us out of this crisis.
"What this country needs is for the cost-of-living crisis to be resolved, for the day-to-day needs of individuals and families to be met, and for everyone to have the means to live a fulfilled and safe life.
“This will be the second Prime Minister in a row that the country did not vote for, introducing policies that the country did not get a say in. The only way we can be confident that we have a government that has the mandate to govern is by having a General Election, and we urge the next Prime Minister to seek consent of the public through the ballot box as a matter of urgency.”
