Social Work Sector Statement | Support for social workers and practitioners
The recent acts of racism and violent disorder in parts of the UK is of huge concern to us all. It is shocking, distressing and abhorrent to see hate-driven, racist crime being planned and targeted against citizens from migrants and ethnic minority communities, including social workers and practitioners. While incidents have thankfully subsided in recent days, we are acutely aware that many people will still be worried and concerned about possible future attacks, and risk to their own safety.
As a sector we know that some social workers and practitioners will be directly affected or feeling at direct and real risk of harm because of ethnicity, the colour of our skin, religion, protected characteristics or for other reasons. If you feel at particular risk or just need to talk about concerns, queries or fears please speak to your line manager, peers, your professional Association, elected leaders, trade unions or anyone else to discuss concerns and to explore further support at this time.
We are united across the sector in supporting social work staff and practitioners in these difficult times. We know that social workers and practitioners often live and work in the communities they serve. The citizens involved in clearing up the debris, reaching out to neighbours, talking to children and young people about racism and Islamophobia, standing united with inter faith organisations is what truly matters. We stand with you and the majority of good and decent citizens of the communities we serve.
Respect for diversity, principles of social justice and ethical values is core to our training, education, practice and leadership and will prevail.
