The number of offenders ordered to carry out unpaid work in the Community as an alternative to a jail sentence has dropped. 

The Scottish Government published Criminal Justice Social Work Statistics on Monday that showed the number of Community Payback Orders has decreased for the second consecutive year.

SASW was asked to comment on the decrease, where we argued that social workers are working extremely hard - often unpaid and in their own evenings and weekends - to fulfil their duties, and that failures to adequately resource third sector agencies supporting the delivery of Community Packback Orders could account for a lack of confidence in sheriffs accepting these recommendations from practitioners.
