The British Association of Social Workers Northern Ireland (BASW NI) invites expressions of interest from an experienced independent social worker to undertake a short-term consultancy assignment supporting stakeholder engagement across Northern Ireland. The consultancy will comprise 10 days of work between September and December 2026. 

The specific dates will be agreed with the successful applicant and may include some evening commitments. 

Purpose of the role 

The consultant will support BASW NI to maintain and strengthen its profile, relationships and engagement with key stakeholders across the social work and social care sectors. The work will include representing BASW NI at meetings, professional and celebration events, and ensuring that the views, interests and contribution of social workers are effectively communicated. 

Key responsibilities 

The consultant will be expected to: 

  • Represent BASW NI at agreed stakeholder meetings, conferences, award events and other professional engagements. 
  • Build and maintain constructive relationships with statutory organisations, employers, professional bodies, universities, and other relevant partners. 
  • Promote BASW NI’s work, values and priorities. 
  • Engage with social workers and other stakeholders to identify key professional issues, concerns and opportunities. 
  • Provide concise written or verbal briefings following meetings and events. 
  • Identify opportunities for future partnership working, member engagement and professional influence. 
  • Undertake any reasonable preparatory or follow-up activity associated with the agreed consultancy work. 

Person specification 

Applicants should demonstrate: 

  • A recognised social work qualification. 
  • Current or recent registration with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, or another UK social work regulator. 
  • Significant experience of social work practice, leadership, policy, professional representation or stakeholder engagement. 
  • A strong understanding of the social work and social care landscape in Northern Ireland. 
  • Excellent communication, networking and relationship-building skills. 
  • The ability to represent BASW NI confidently and professionally with a wide range of audiences. 
  • An understanding of the role of a professional association in supporting and representing social workers. 
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing commitments and provide clear feedback. 
  • Commitment to BASW’s Code of Ethics, equality, diversity and social justice. 

Previous experience of representing an organisation at public or professional events would be advantageous. 

Consultancy arrangements 

The assignment will involve up to 10 consultancy days between September and December 2026. Some work may take place outside normal office hours, particularly attendance at award ceremonies or evening events. 

The consultant will be responsible for their own tax, National Insurance, professional indemnity insurance and other requirements associated with self-employed consultancy work.
