Social Work with Older People Training
This session provides an opportunity to learn, discuss and reflect with peers. It highlights the evidence from research, practice experience and lived experience about what social work offers to older people and their networks, what this looks like in practice, and where you can make a positive difference. It builds skills, knowledge and values, including those related to assessment and support, therapeutic, advocacy, coordination and safeguarding roles.
The session promotes relational, rights-based, intersectional and anti-ageist practice. It highlights factors and resources that support good practice, and provides space to plan how you can use learning to improve your work.

⭐ Trainer Bio: Gerry Nosowska, Director, Effective Practice
I support practitioners, managers and leaders in social care to improve the experiences and outcomes of people, who draw on care and support. I carry out research and evaluation, develop strategy, create practice guidance and policies, and develop and deliver learning events.
My specialism is social work with older people. I was part of the Social Work with Older People research project team, and work on a range of projects to challenge ageism. I am co-chair of the BASW Special Interest Group on Social Work and Ageing and am the International Federation of Social Workers’ representative on ageing to the UN in Geneva. I am a registered social worker. I worked in local authority social care services and then for Research in Practice, a charity that promotes evidence-informed practice. From 2018-2022, I was Chair of the British Association of Social Workers. I co-hosted Helpful Social Work podcast 2016-2024.
