BASW Celebrates International Romani Day
International Romani Day (Saturday, 8 April) is a celebration of Romani people, culture, and history. It is also a day to highlight the prejudice and discrimination faced by Romani people around the world, both historically and in the present.
BASW is committed to working to end racism and oppression across social work and society as part of our overarching commitment to promote human rights, equality, diversity and inclusion for all. Last year, BASW adopted a statement outlining our commitment to actively tackling racism and discrimination against Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people (anti-Gypsyism) and promoting their human and social rights, primarily in UK context. Read the statement here.
BASW has resources and information available to support social workers in challenging discrimination against gypsy, roma and traveller communities. These are available on our website here.
BASW recently launched a special interest group on social work with Romani and Traveller communities. The group provides an opportunity for social workers to come together and stand in solidarity to bring about fairness and justice for Romani and Traveller Communities. More information about how to join the group is available here.
In the meantime, everyone at BASW wishes you a very happy International Romani Day 2023.
