BASW chair blog: 'Why I can't wait for this year's Annual Conference and AGM'
By Gerry Nosowska, BASW UK chair
At BASW, there is a community of ethical, expert, empathetic people; fantastic human beings. And in June, we get to spend two days together – in person, virtually or a bit of both – in learning and in friendship.
Pandemic, war, hostile policies, work pressures, bills. Social work is difficult enough at the best of times and these are not the best of times.
When I was a new social worker, I briefly thought I could do social work on my own.
Fortunately, I had great colleagues and friends to remind me that this is not a solo activity - and to pick me up when I realised how much I needed support.
Help givers must be help receivers. Yet, social workers are not good at asking for help.
The BASW Conference and Annual General Meeting is a boost to our love for social work and our motivation to be social workers.
This year’s theme - social work for the future - will engage us in remembering why social work matters and what we bring to shaping the way our society develops.
It will remind us that we are change agents and encourage us to keep being a force for good - I can’t wait!
