BASW to discuss Winterbourne View, the Francis report and much more at Compass on 4 March
Winterbourne View, the Francis Report, the Children and Families Bill, plus career guidance, will all be explored in detail by BASW spokespeople at a major exhibition on 4 March. Offering a range of seminars on topical social work issues, the Compass Jobs Fair in Birmingham will feature a seminar on the 'Implications for Social Workers of Winterbourne View and the Francis Report on Stafford Hospitals', as well as 'Making Sense of the Children and Families Bill', followed by a Q&A on careers guidance.
BASW will also be exhibiting at the free event, with staff on hand to meet with visitors, answer questions and sign up anyone wishing to join the Association.
Making Sense of the Children and Families Bill - what will it mean for the future direction of services to children in England
Presented by Nushra Mansuri, BASW Professional Officer (England)
This seminar is a chance to take stock of what the world of policy and practice is likely to look like once the Children and Families Bill becomes law.
British Association of Social Workers - Implications for Social Workers of Winterbourne View and the Francis Report on Mid Staffordshire hospitals
Presented by Joe Godden, BASW Professional Officer (England)
Whistleblowing is an obvious link between the events at Winterbourne View and Mid Staffordshire, both for health workers and for social workers. Despite the appalling failures in both cases, however, the scandals do create an opportunity to make whistleblowing easier and to improve the way we look after vulnerable adults, which Joe Godden will explore in detail.
A question and answer career guidance session
Hosted by The British Association of Social Workers
BASW's team will be on hand to talk social workers, and prospective social workers, about your employment options, whether you are a newly qualified practitioner or an experienced professional looking for the next step. With considerable uncertainty around the employment market this advice session will help you look at some of the alternatives that may be available.
There are limited spaces available for this question and answer session.
Some members may also be especially interested in the following sessions:
Business and tax advice for independent social workers: Presented by Foremans LLP, chartered accountants specialising in tailoring HMRC compliant solutions for individual contractors, this seminar will discuss the contracting options available to the professional social worker. The session will offer information about comparing the advantages and disadvantages of being a Sole Trader, Limited Company or Umbrella Employee; how to start contracting; advice on what to do to run a tax efficient business; and offer the opportunity to discuss the tax allowable expenses available to a contractor.
