BASW England responds to report on Government failures in Adult Social Care
We stand firm in our commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of individuals in need of support and recognise the importance of addressing the systemic issues outlined in the report.
The reference to social work as an integral part of social care underscores the essential role our profession plays in supporting adults with diverse needs and their families.
Regarding the points raised in the report, BASW England shares concerns over the chronic underfunding and lack of strategic planning that have placed immense strain on local authorities and care providers. The absence of a clear roadmap and fragmented funding have brought the adult social care sector to a critical crossroads, as highlighted by the Public Accounts Committee's findings.
We also note the committee's scepticism regarding the effectiveness of Integrated Care Systems and the need for greater representation of adult social care within health-dominated structures. Furthermore, the ambiguity surrounding the allocation of additional funding and the absence of concrete measures to assess value for money are deeply troubling.
BASW England remains concerned by the significant vacancies within the care workforce and the delayed implementation of crucial reforms, such as the cap on care costs. These issues not only jeopardise the quality of care provided but also undermine the dignity and rights of those in need of support.
Commenting on the report, Jackie Mahoney Co-chair of the adult group says:
“BASW England calls for urgent action to address the systemic challenges facing the adult social care sector. We urge the government to prioritise long-term, sustainable solutions that prioritise the well-being of people and ensure the dignity and rights of all individuals receiving care.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advocating for social justice and equitable access to quality care for all members of society. We remain dedicated to working collaboratively with stakeholders to effect meaningful change and will be campaigning tirelessly in the upcoming general election to make sure the next Government fully grasps the scale of the challenge to fix adult social care in England.”
