New Secretaries of State for adult social care and children’s social care
Multiple Ministers and Secretaries of State resigned from the UK Government on 5th July, creating vacancies in key positions such as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and Secretary of State for Education which includes children’s social work.
The biggest resignation came from Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Last night the Prime Minister had to scramble to find replacements.
Chancellor
The new Chancellor is Nadhim Zahawi MP, who until yesterday was the Secretary of State for Education. Nadhim will have the huge task of tackling the cost of living that is hurting so many individuals and families across the UK.
Secretary of State for Education
Michelle Donelan MP was appointed to be the new Secretary of State for Education on Tuesday 5th July 2022, but has now resigned from the post. The Department for Education currently has no Secretary of State and no Ministers.
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
The new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is Steve Barclay MP. This is no small job, with health and social services still suffering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and upcoming legislation such as the Draft Mental Health Bill.
Children’s Minister
The Children’s Minister, Will Quince MP, also resigned. There is no word yet on his replacement.
