Response to publication of Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 report | BASW statement
As the Grenfell Inquiry’s Phase 2 final report is published, BASW stands in solidarity with the survivors, bereaved families, and all those affected by the disaster on 14th June 2017. This report marks a significant moment in the ongoing pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability.
The report highlights that the deaths of 54 adults and 18 children were avoidable. Grenfell Tower fire was an avoidable tragedy that exposed deep-rooted inequalities, dishonesty, greed, incompetence, systemic failures, and a disregard for the safety and wellbeing of people living in Grenfell Tower. More than seven years later, the survivors and bereaved families continue to seek the justice they deserve. They have shown immense courage and resilience in their fight for the truth, and it is imperative that the responsible individuals, organisation and authorities are held accountable for the failings that led to this disaster.
BASW fully supports Grenfell United in calling for the government to implement all of the Inquiry recommendations without delay and for the Police and CPS to proceed with criminal investigation and prosecutions.
We hope this can lead to lasting change, ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
Maris Stratulis, National Director of BASW England, said:
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, friends, survivors and all those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire disaster, we must never forget the dearly loved children and adults who lost their lives in the fire. As the Inquiry’s final report is released, we join survivors and bereaved families in demanding truth, justice, and real accountability from those in power. We must ensure that such a devastating and horrific tragedy is never allowed to happen again. The voices of those affected must continue to be heard and respected, and meaningful swift action must follow.”
BASW will continue to advocate for justice, accountability, and the for the recommendations from the report to be implemented.
