Wales: Lead the way and speak with action, new Prime Minister urged
BASW Cymru’s National Director, Prof. Sam Baron, has called on the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, to work closely with the newly appointed Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP, and his wider team, to deliver an ambitious plan that can become a beacon of excellence and best practice to the devolved nations across the UK.
BASW Cymru (British Association of Social Workers), is the largest professional membership organisation for social work in Wales and is a member of the larger BASW family across the UK. As the voice for social work and social workers, it represents the profession in addition to providing campaigning, career development opportunities, practice resources, advice, and representation.
Speaking about the results of the General Election, from a Wales perspective, Prof. Sam Baron said:
“The almost complete silence from the two main parties in the run-up to the election, around social work and social care, was deeply depressing, leaving many to think the challenges facing social workers was not high on anyone’s list of priorities.
“While many of the issues facing social workers in Wales are devolved to the Welsh Government, this is a unique opportunity for the new Prime Minister and his team to outline a programme of work that can truly deliver for the social work workforce but, more importantly, for some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
“The whole of the Labour Party campaign focused on “Change”. Now is the time to lead the way and speak with action. This is their unique opportunity to do things differently and kick-start a social work and social care revolution across the UK.”
