Establishing an intersectional appreciation of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, prejudice and oppression in social work | BASW England Greater Manchester Branch Event
The BASW England Greater Manchester branch of BASW welcome guest speaker David Redpath Smith. This talk aims to develop a critical awareness and understanding of the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, homophobia, and transphobia, at individual, organisational and professional levels.
David is a local authority social work Practice Manager, Practice Educator and Best Interest Assessor and has been involved in the development and delivery of LGBTQ+ SW training with his local teaching partnership.
Within this talk, David will discuss Power, Privilege and Inequality and the operation of ‘normativity’ as a concept and a social practice, and consider how to:
• build confidence and competence, enabling meaningful anti-oppressive practice as social work professionals
• appreciate the complexities of LGBTQ+ identities to take that learning into everyday practice
• develop the ability to share personal perspectives and experiences in a supportive environment
• take responsibility to integrate themes into practice, and establish an ‘intersectional’ appreciation of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, prejudice, and oppression in social work practice
