Age assessment is a legally complex and ethically significant area of social work practice involving important safeguarding, welfare and human rights considerations. This foundation session introduces practitioners to the legal and policy framework governing age assessment in the Uk, the principles of Merton-compliant practice, and the key stages of the assessment process.
This session provides an opportunity to learn, discuss and reflect with peers. It highlights the evidence from research, practice experience and lived experience about what social work offers to older people and their networks, what this looks like in practice, and where you can make a positive difference. It builds skills, knowledge and values, including those related to assessment and support, therapeutic, advocacy, coordination and safeguarding roles.
Attachment theory is widely taught in social work – yet much of what circulates is outdated, irrelevant or overextended. This session cuts through the noise. Drawing on the latest research and the realities of frontline practice, it identifies which attachment concepts genuinely add value to child and family social work, and which are best set aside. Designed to meet you wherever you are in your understanding and use, the session will either strengthen your existing approach with evidence you can cite, or offer concrete ideas to refine it.
Hospital Social Work in Practice is an introductory programme designed to give social workers a clear, structured overview of what hospital social work involves. The session explores the core functions of the role, the legal frameworks that shape practice, and the key processes that drive hospital discharge and patient flow.
Participants are introduced to the realities of working in a fast paced, high pressure clinical environment, including the importance of effective multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration and the common barriers that can arise.

SAEF provides a clear, defensible and trauma informed structure for completing age assessments with separated children. It strengthens practitioner confidence by breaking complex decisions into transparent, evidence based stages aligned with case law and statutory guidance. The framework emphasises cultural humility, anti discriminatory practice and the child’s lived experience, reducing reliance on subjective judgement. Practitioners learn how to plan, conduct and record assessments ethically, manage uncertainty and produce robust reasoning that stands up to scrutiny.
